Situated in a quiet semi-residential location, yet just a few minutes walk from all that Sandown has to offer. Built as an Admiral’s residence in 1870 and later becoming the Station Master’s house for Sandown & Shanklin, the lodge has retained many of its original features.
Whether you are looking for a good old fashioned family beach type holiday or a base for exploring the rest of the island, Bertram Lodge has a warm & friendly atmosphere & with the large selection of good Home cooked food we invite you to relax & enjoy your well earned holiday with us.
In the high season we book some of the island’s top performers. We also enjoy organising bingo nights, horseracing nights, and nostalgia nights for a bit of comedy and extra entertainment.
In the mid 19th century, Sandown’s potential as a seaside resort was recognised and it soon became popular with many well known visitors including Lewis Carroll, Charles Darwin, John Keats, and Henry Longfellow. It is one of the typical tourist towns on the island with its regular market, arcades, the pier with attractions, and lovely sandy beaches, all overlooked by Culver Down.
Along the seafront to the North of the town, you will find a Dinosaur Museum, Brown’s pitch ‘n’ putt golf course, bowling greens, and a crazy golf course. Also, this part of Sandown is home to the Isle of Wight Tiger and Big Cat Sanctuary, where they specialise in the breeding and care of some of the planet’s most severely threatened creatures. This is located in Granite Fort, which was in operation during the war to protect the island’s coastline.
This establishment is committed to catering for the needs of walkers and cyclists and has been approved by VisitBritain after meeting the criteria of the Walkers Welcome Scheme and the Cyclists Welcome Scheme.
